Resolving Interpersonal Conflict

A group of secondary friends and I meet up quite frequently. Last Friday, we met up again, and X was late for two hours. I was not happy as this was not the first time that she was late. In fact, she is usually late for our gathering, ranging from 15 minutes to one hour. However, this was the first time that she was late for so long (two hours).

"what took you so long?" I asked her.

"I over-slept,"she replied. And pretended that nothing has happened by reading the menu.

When I questioned her whether she had set an alarm, she said yes, but that she had not heard it rang. Perhaps, she was in too deep a sleep.

I told her that this has happened quite a few times already and that I was uncomfortable with it. Then I proposed a solution. I told her that maybe two hours before the meeting I will call her to check with her.

She said okay, but looked unhappy.

Qn 1) Do you think I could have handled it better? What do you think that I should do?
Qn 2) Can you think of any other solutions?

  1. Actually, I don't really understand why you were not happy about your friend being late. You took it too personal. Since you were going out with a group of friends, you could always enjoy your time with your other friends as they were already there.
Your friend was aways late, that simply means she might not be really excited about the gathering. You should never let a single person ruin your wonderful time. One person is not here yet, but party is still the same party.

  2. I think I was a bit upset because this has been going on for years. And actually all of us (not just me) are not happy just that the rest of my friends don't dare to voice it out loud. Although I do think that I could have handled it better. Perhaps talking to her in private about it.

  3. Well she needs to know that it is not polite or professional to be a pthological late-comer. Punctuality is highly valued in most business and professoonal circles. It is also a sign of taking one's friends for granted to be constantly late and then to not even apologize. I think what you offered to do was fine- after all you didn't actually tell her off for the being late- just offered to buzz her and remind her :))
